With over 15 years experience in architectural modular design, I have been involved in all aspects of the manufacturing process. My experience is diverse. I have worked in different types of modular home companies such as Skyline Homes and Haven Custom Homes during the course of my career. Most recently I was the Engineering and Design Manager for Details Homes in Sacramento, California, utilizing green building systems.
While at Details Homes, I created the construction drawings for Michelle Kaufman houses. The Michelle Kaufman houses had tankless water heaters, Maniblocks, in-floor radiant heating systems and foam blown insulation. Perhaps the biggest addition I made to the green building process was the implementation of BuildersCAD.
Earlier in my career I was on a design team that searched all over the country for the perfect 3D program that designs and frames houses for the modular industry. What we found was an amazing, state of the art, 3D program called BuildersCAD with the most powerful framer called Intelliframer. This program is highly intelligent and speaking from experience this program is the best design tool for the industry.
BuildersCAD saves thousands of dollars due to lumber waste and it reduces manpower waste by eliminating most mistakes. Some modular plants still use some form of AutoCAD but AutoCAD programs are not designed specifically for modular building.
There is however a program I have worked with called AutoCAD Architect with an add on called HSBCAD that actually modeled itself after BuildersCAD and Intelliframer. It, however, is not as cost effective and is much more complicated.
I pride myself in creating a smooth and financially responsible processes to build custom modular homes. While at Details Homes, I was in the process of getting systems approvals run through third party inspectors to cut the whole submittal process time in half. To date, I do not know of any other plant in California that is currently doing systems approval. Being involved in a start up company that specializes in the green building of high end custom modular homes, I have found BuildersCAD more than pays for itself in a very short period of time. My opinion is that the best way to create a well oiled machine is through feedback, quality control, walking the line and effective communication.
All of these processes added together successfully shaped a green process that could easily be copied in any plant today.
